When was the last time you had ‘me-time’ and how did you spend that time?

I last had ‘me-time’ just this morning! I set my alarm before my twins wake up (around 7am) and went for a walk with my dog. I find that having that quiet time out in the fresh air has so many health benefits (physical as well as mental) and I try to do it most days.

What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?

Working out, without a doubt is my favourite way to look after myself. I do it not only for the physical benefits, but also the mental benefits. Being a Mama is challenging and I want to be at my best. Working out gives me the opportunity to mentally checkout, melt the stress away and recharge my batteries. I aim to train at the gym 5-6 days a week, although Mum Life often disrupts that, so I’ll often make up a workout that I can do at home when the babies are having a nap during the day. Plus, those feel good endorphins are addictive and I truly enjoy it!

What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create ‘me-time’? How did you make time in your schedule for yourself?

I think sometimes we just HAVE to make that time because let’s face it, we all have those days where we feel like we’re about to lose our minds! Don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether it be your hubby/partner, family or friends. Go for a walk, go to the gym, go get your nails done, go buy that extra large coffee that you’ve been dreaming about all day. Whatever your thing is, just do it. Above all, DO NOT FEEL GUILTY. You are not a bad mother for taking time out for yourself. I can guarantee that you will feel better for it.

I will admit that it’s not always easy to create time for myself. We’re all busy. Life is busy! I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself but I have learnt that if I don’t look after myself, my babies won’t get the best version of me. Don’t get me wrong, my kids are always my main priority. They are my world. What I didn’t realize initially is that I’m their world too. I’m their Mother, their main caregiver, teacher, nurse, entertainer and provider (amongst other things!) So as hard as it sometimes is, I always make the effort to have me time. Whether it be getting up that hour earlier before my partner goes to work, putting the kids into my gym crèche, or asking a family member to babysit. I want my kids to grow up with a happy and healthy mum.
