When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?
I am a creature of habit and can’t start my day without a cup of English Breakfast tea and a walk- so that was this morning! I have done this for as long as I can remember- EVERY DAY! It gives me an opportunity to be present and in my body (I walk fast!) and helps me to mentally prepare for the day ahead. I feel that this little self-care ritual helps me to be positive and appreciate the littlest things in life like the smell of the ocean or a gorgeous bird that crossed my path. I like to squeeze in my cuppa before my little 12 month old boy Sam awakes. Of course, sometimes this doesn’t happen but I love it when it does.
What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?
As mentioned, I love my morning ritual of a cup of tea and walk. Actually, drinking tea at any time helps me to be present and is a practice in mindfulness. It enables me to forget about the woes and worries of the world and appreciate what “is”, right at that time. Another activity that I do less often now that I have a little baby is saunas. This is not only really detoxifying by helping the body rid of toxins through the skin, but helps me to relax and unwind both physically and mentally. I find it the best de-stresser! And of course, massage! Who doesn’t love a great massage?!
What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?
I am not sure whether I am the best authority on this! I can’t say that I have a lot of me-time but there are some simple things like having a cup of tea that don’t take long and really do help to keep you happy and sane in the busy world of working and being a Mum. My walks are now mostly with Sam but I still really enjoy it. Seeing the world through his eyes has helped me to slow down and appreciate the simpler things in life.
