When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?
I carved out a couple of hours last weekend to make an ice cream hat. They are crazy millinery pieces that look like ice cream scoops in a cone. It involves feather and glitter and a lot of glue. Some people like to watch TV, other people like to exercise, me I like to hot glue things to relax and be peaceful. It calms the inner critic.
What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?
Hiking, cooking, talking on the phone to my best friend in London, and being grateful for everything I have. I try really hard not to get stressed out over the things I have no control over. You can’t control the uncontrollable.
What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?
It’s so hard, because for the most part putting yourself first, even for a short amount of time, means that something else has to wait. And that’s where the guilt creeps in. But I keep telling myself that my son isn’t going to die if I don’t sit next to him whilst he reads or watches TV. And the world won’t collapse if the washing up doesn’t get done til the morning. I try and arrange my schedule so I have a window here and a window there for myself. And if there’s too much going on then I just grab the time when I can find it. And I’m very clear about what I want to do with any free time I might have, and it usually involves doing something creative that has nothing to do with work, or forcing myself to exercise.
