When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?
I try to think of Carter’s nap time each day as “me-time” and aim to do something that’s nourishing to my mind, body, or spirit for at least part of it. Some days that means sitting on the couch with Netflix and a bag of chocolate chips. Other days it’s doing a yoga DVD, reading, or engaging in something creative. Even on busy days where I need to use his nap to be more “productive” I try to set aside at least 30 minutes to do something restorative for me.
What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?
Pedicures are my favorite self-care indulgence! I try to book a pedicure every month to 6-weeks at a really nice spa or hotel. It’s more expensive than a regular nail salon but you definitely get what you’re paying for - I absolutely love the massage, the nice smelling lotions, the relaxing atmosphere, and end result of perfectly painted toes.
What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?
My priorities and day-to-day schedule shifted so much after becoming a parent that it actually took me a while to figure out how to create “me-time” after Carter was born. Once I realized that I could take better care of him if I took better care of myself, I started to prioritize “me-time” without feeling as guilty. Now, when I set aside time for self-care, I try to be engaged and present by not multi-tasking and by being mindful of the moment. It’s definitely not always easy to find time for myself so on days when I can’t, I think about this article (http://qz.com/818998/googles-former-happiness-guru-developed-a-three-second-brain-exercise-for-finding-joy/) which says you can create “thin slices of joy” by noticing the pleasant sensations that go along with mundane experiences. Over time, these little joys add up and most definitely help to nourish the spirit!
