Two minutes with … Liz Sefton, mama to Isabella, 8 and Jonty, 5

When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?

I have me-time every morning. It is a part of my routine. I wake up before the rest of the family and I exercise either at the gym, go for walk, meditate or go to pilates and always find that sets me up for the rest of the day. I come home and have a shower and then give myself a mini massage called a body boost using essentials oils. During my little self care massage ritual I say positive affirmations, think about the things I am grateful for or just ask for courage to get me through the day. At night I also enjoy 5 or 10 minutes at bedtime of some guided meditation or reading a book.

What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?

Regular chiropractic care is something I have always done. This is something children and I do regularly together. It is important for the brain and body communication.

I usually have a massage every couple of months. I use to love health spas back before kids but with time and money that isn’t something I do regularly anymore. However last year I found my love for aromatherapy again and was introduced to Twenty8 essentials. I have been lucky enough to enrol in their education course and since then have really come to understand the power and importance of rituals and routines and love the positive effect it has had on me. So every day I now have a regular self care ritual of skincare, body boost, spritzing and using a vaporizer/diffuser both at home and work. And I can now replicate those health spas at home with the beautiful twenty8 products. By making health and self-care a priority for me I have noticed the ripple effect it has had on my family, friends and work.

I also have a regular ‘mums only dinner’ with friends every couple of months and find our evenings together really nourishes my soul. We laugh a lot!

What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?

Without sounding too harsh I think if you have time for Facebook and social media you have time for self care and me-time. It is just a matter of prioritising at times.

I also think it is a great to get up before the rest of the family to allocate some time and it soon becomes a habit.

Also I think it’s important to schedule your time into the family calendar so hubby and kids all know that on this time, on this day you are spending time doing something you love and that it is booked in like an appointment.
