When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?

Me Time is a rarity in our house as I’m always running around either doing school work, print work, blog work or housework! A couple of months ago I was able to jet off to Sydney for the weekend with two of my best friends. Our three families own a business together and the three Dads took six kids down to the beach for the weekend whilst we were away. It was just lovely to shop together, lay in bed chatting like teenagers and just do what we wanted. I honestly truly believe that if we do not take care of ourselves then we cannot be great Mums. Our children need to learn that it is ok to be away from Mum every now and again, and it is equally important for Mums to have their space!

What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?

I’ve struggled with anxiety, particularly since my Dad passed away suddenly last year. Our son has also been a real challenge with sleep and I’ve gone crazy trying to keep on top of things with little to no sleep myself! I’ve learned about breathing techniques and use mindful meditations when I go to bed. There are so many great apps but I find Smiling Minds to be the best. I’ve also learnt to just stop and be mindful of how I’m feeling. If I’m feeling tense, or about to lose it then I try to notice these feelings and just repeat positive thoughts to myself. Initially I found this a little weird, but it actually works!

What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?

Look ahead in your calendar and plan it in. Even if it is a walk for an hour. I find having something to work towards a real motivator. Even if it getting my hair done in three weeks time!
