When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?
I treated myself to a movie! As an actress and writer I’m a huge fan of movies. So my husband stayed home while I went to see Wonder Woman on opening night. And I’m so glad I did. What an empowering way to celebrate some me time! I loved sitting in the theater with the popcorn all to myself and watching an incredible story with a female hero.
What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?
It’s the little things that bring me the most joy when it comes to self care. A good cup of coffee from my favorite coffee shop. My favorite iTunes playlist in my car. Checking things off my to-do list. They may not be physical or outward versions of self care but they certainly are good for my mental health. I think as moms we forgot about that part of ourselves.
What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?
Mamas, plan for me time the same way you plan to go to the gym, or the doctor, or to buy groceries. It’s that important to get an hour or two to yourself whenever you can. Start with an hour weekly then build from there. Maybe you and a friend can share a babysitter or nanny for a few hours a week to get some me time. As a family member or friend to watch the kids while you go shopping or get a pedicure. I can’t stress this enough how important it is to give yourself a mental health break. I work it into my weekly schedule the same way I would an important meeting. It’s that vital.
