When was the last time you had “me-time” and how did you spend that time?
I try to sneak in a quick walk most days after dinner, before bedtime. That is a great time for me to dash out for 20 while my Hubby does the bath & book routine before bed. It’s a nice way to end the day and I get a bit of fresh air and exercise as well.
What are some of your favourite ways to practice self care?
To be honest I am very guilty of letting this one slide, although I do recognise the importance of taking the time for myself I am not very good at it! I’ve never been able to meditate and struggle to do as much yoga as I would like to or other things you think of when you think ‘self care’. For me it is pretty basic…Hydrate, eat well, sleep as much I can and repeat! Sleep can be a tough one especially when your feeding through the night as I am at the moment but I always try to get in as many hours as I can. You really have to make a conscious disciplined effort to prioritise sleep as it is a huge hormone regulator and you really need it to feel well and function at your best for yourself and your family. I also believe food is such a tool for wellness that if I keep my water intake up, my meals balanced, that is the best way to care for myself and my body. And a manicure never goes astray of course 🙂
What advice would you give to mamas struggling to create “me-time”? How do you make time in your schedule for yourself?
If you can get up earlier than the kids, even 15 minutes to have a bit of ‘serenity before the storm’ I call it, do it! It is so nice to be able to wake up and do a few exercises, plan dinner, or return an email with a HOT coffee (not the one you forget on the counter and let go cold later in the morning when you’re trying to get everyone fed and dressed haha) and take a few deep breaths to start the day. I think also, we need to remind ourselves it’s OK to take that time too, and just act on it when we can, and not fill those pauses in the day with laundry folding or cleaning up the toys for the 3rd time. Let it wait and do something that feels like a treat just for a few minutes. You’re worth it Mumma and you’ll be better for it!
